It’s possible that I’ve logged more hours traveling than any other travel advisor out there—thanks to my 40+ year long career as a flight attendant!

I joined an international airline before I graduated college, and began crisscrossing the skies.

My favorite perk of the job?

Our European layovers, which often lasted just 48 hours.

During layovers, some flight attendants would “slam click”—meaning they would head straight to the hotel, crash into bed, and not re-emerge until it was time for our plane to take off again.

But not me.

I would drop my bags in my room and start exploring. I walked miles all over the cities we stayed in—like London, Paris, and Frankfurt—popping into cafes and cathedrals, getting lost in different neighborhoods and challenging myself to find my way back without GPS.

Sure, I may have ended up a tad more tired than my colleagues who “slam clicked.” But how could I stay locked up in my room when European charm beckoned right outside?

At this point, I’ve visited Europe at least 20 times (that’s not even counting my layovers!). Every time I go back—often with my family in tow—I’m even more enchanted.
